You're in an exclusive club and you don't even know it
...If you have a 202 area code, that is. I got a new cell phone yesterday and it came with a 240 area code, which I thought was only for the yokels in Olney and Frederick. Apparently, they're using 240 for DC cell phones now, so we can now look forward to the sort of area code snobbery New Yorkers have known for years. 202, 703 and 301 are all well and good, but if you have a 240 or whatever new area code they're using in NoVa now, you're still a little wet behind the ears.
For those reasons and more, I just ported the number I've had since 2001, which isn't even in 202.
They said it would take a week.
Next time someone tells me competition always means better service, I'll wave my cell phone at them.
UPDATE: So I got a call from the T-Mobile people last night. Apparently, they're ready to port my old number, but they forgot my old number.

A week? It took them 36 hours for me.

as a courtesy to your readers, i think you guys should do a feature on the cell number porting and how it's going so far, both nationwide and in your world.

Cell phone porting has gone beautifully. It took only two calls to T-mobile to get my phone ported properly; I got a completely free phone from Amazon that rocks, and I've had better reception with T-mobile than I did with Sprint. Plus, I never had to talk to the evil people at Sprint customer service EVER AGAIN.
Has your phone arrived yet?

hmmm... I've considered switching from Sprint to either t-mobile or Verizon. Is your reception better with t-mobile overall, or just in some specific places you weren't able to get decent Sprint reception before?

Amanda,
It's been about the same as Sprint everywhere (although was a bit better in my mom's apartment in Rockville). If you're in it for good reception, Verizon's your only real choice -- they're coverage can't be beat. But I wanted a world phone, plus I like T-mobile's deals, plus I like t-mobile's customer service. And my phone (and RJ3's phone, and NM's phone) is damn cool.

but last i checked, verizon isn't giving away any super phones.

I think the "can you hear me now" guy alone is sufficient reason to avoid verizon.

He's not as creepy as the Sprint PCS guy, though. Anyway, how *do* I get one of those free super-phones?

It's all about amazon.com.
