Enola. Gay?
So, what does everybody think about the Enola Gay controversy? Is it really a controversy if a few people hold up signs and chant? Should they have removed all mention of the nuclear bomb that made the plane worth saving and putting in a museum? Does this site have enough traffic to generate some comments? Do I have to end every sentence with a question mark?

Yes. No. Yes. Yes.
Just kidding.
I think the Enola Gay should certainly be displayed, but that it should displayed in the right historical context. Explaining what it was used for is vital, as it explaining what role it played in ending the war -- both the destruction caused and the potential destruction averted.

I don't think this is much of a controversy, really. Anyway, I thought it had been on display at the Air and Space museum anyway and was just moved to the new facility? Keeping planes involved in ethically dicey missions out of the national museum devoted to aviation and aviation history is ridiculous anyway.

I believe the nose of the Enola Gay was on display downtown, but the whole plane is far too heavy even to be on the floor at the museum (I think the same for the Space Shuttle Enterprise). The Enola Gay, like it or not, was one of the most important aircraft in history, and while any explanatory narrative should include the fact that civilians were killed when the bomb was dropped, it should also indicate that the plane virtually ended World War 2. All that aside, there is no reason for the plane not to be on display, and throwing fake blood on it is just petulant. Heck, there are Japanese and Nazi airplanes on display, too, but no one seems to be complaining about that.

I visited the museum today. I definitely think it should be on display because of its significance in the history of flight. However, I do think it should include at least SOME information on the results of it. We don't have to say "America was so stupid and killed all those innocent people because our country is pompous and selfish." Just a little blurb on the effects of the bomb would be good, and I really don't think it's too much to ask.
