Dean doesn't top 50%? Uh-oh

This could be very, very bad, considering he was the only candidate with any money on the ballot. Why he didn't blow Sharpton out of the water instead of keeping it within nine points is both dissapointing and bizarre. But then again, Sharpton's history as a New York election loser shows that while he never wins, he always does better than the pre-election polls show.

Especially given Dean's network in D.C. and how much time and effort they put into "getting the vote out", it bodes very poorly for Dean. Sharpton has the added bonus of actually showing up for the primary, something none of the other candidates bothered to do, but that shouldn't have put him that high in the polls.

At least turnout was slightly better than last election.

You forget, DC has always given Sharpton more than his due. Think about it: this is the city that gave you "Hizzhonnah Marion Barry, Mayr f'Life." "Get out the vote" programs are historically ineffective in this city for candidates who aren't Barry, Holmes-Norton, or Al Sharpton. The loud Dean people, and those they got interested in Dean, were going to vote anyways, and not for Sharpton...Sharpton's base in Dc will always be there.
