Tinfoil hat transit
Most people who work for WMATA and the Washington Times are complete idiots. When they get together, magic happens:
"According to the new policy, personal SmarTrip information may be released by Metro only in what are called "limited instances" -- the request must be made by the registered user of the SmarTrip card, there must be a court order, or the request must come from law enforcement when the information is required in the course of an investigation in which time is of the essence.
"Basically, it means nobody can get an individual's SmarTrip data," said Lisa Farbstein, a Metro spokeswoman."
So nobody can see my SmartTrip data.
Or The Man can see my SmartTrip data.
Which is it?

What? So you mean they don't have to have a court order? Are they just going to hand over the data if the police say that they're in a hurry? This isn't a policy at all!
Good thing I filled out a fake name when I got my card a few years ago. I guess you don't even have to do that anymore with the parking lot machines. Registering the card i now definitely out of the question though.

I didn't register it either, but suppose police took my card from me during an arrest. They wouldn't need WMATA to connect it to me.

It's pretty clear the Times and Metro are in cahoots to track your wanderings from Columbia Heights to U St and back to Dupont Circle and Capitol Hill.
Time to dust off the big wheel?
